Practical, Sentimental, and Personalized: Gifts Your Bridesmaids Will Treasure

Your bridesmaids certainly deserve thanks for all they contribute to your wedding. They purchase dresses they will in all likelihood never wear again, throw you showers and parties, pitch in uncomplainingly with wedding preparations, travel and maybe even take some time off work, pose for pictures all day long, wear themselves out on the dance floor making sure even your grumpy old uncle has a good time, and above all, make sure you have everything she needs on her special day. Here are three ways to thank your tireless bridesmaids with gifts that they will appreciate and treasure on your wedding day and after.

Practical

One way to treat your bridesmaids is to give them gifts they can use in your wedding. My sister-in-law gave us all makeup that we could use to doll ourselves up for her wedding, including eyeliner that matched our dresses. I gave my bridesmaids handmade necklaces I ordered from an artisan friend, while a friend of mine gave her bridesmaids shawls to wear during her autumn wedding. Purses to carry at the wedding, manicure or pedicure, or even the dresses themselves (if you have that kind of cash) are other practical bridesmaid gift ideas. If you choose to go the practical route, you might consider giving your gifts early or sending out a “heads up” so that your bridesmaids don’t purchase their own accessories.

Sentimental

Since you hopefully know your bridesmaids quite well, consider giving them each something sentimental. The main character in the movie Bridesmaids, Annie, embodies this idea perfectly. She put together a handmade box for her best friend’s wedding filled with all their favorite things from when they were kids. One of my friends picked out a book that would mean something to each bridesmaid. You might make each a playlist of songs that remind you of her, create a photo collage of the two of you together, or pick her up a gift card to her favorite store or restaurant.

Personalized

A thoughtful way to thank your bridesmaids is with personalized gifts. Consider having something monogrammed for your bridesmaids, such as a tote bag or bathrobe. You could display a favorite picture in a personalized photo frame, create a personalized Christmas tree ornament to commemorate your wedding day, or give your bridesmaids an engraved vase in which they can display their bouquets during the wedding reception. Giving your bridesmaids matching personalized t-shirts as an early gift would be a fun addition to any bachelorette party, or they could change into them during the reception as a surprise for your guests and excuse to get a little more comfortable on the dance floor.
